Idea* is a concept project, commenting on the value of waste packaging and the perception of contents. Each box claims to contain a product, but instead can be deconstructed and reconstructed inside out to become its intended contents. After construction it forms a functional product and also a memorable
reminder of how little we appreciate the bland, brown cardboard box.

Creating something beautiful out of something that can usually never be seen.

This display is a collection of images from a chapter in the second book (Disruptions, Reminders & Interventions) entitled When Did That Happen. Retracing the Forgotten Everyday. Every action we do helps us to build up an understanding of the surrounding environment – often the significance of these actions is repressed or completely forgotten.

These installations retrace the learning through interaction that occurred in our homes as we were growing up. These everyday processes help to establish some of the most fundamental actions that our bodies perform – and will carry out thousands of times throughout our lifetimes. A tangible visual record of something so critical, yet often overlooked is created, providing a constant reminder that we have the ability to physically affect our surroundings.

An alternative take on camouflage which allows us to hide the effects that the environment inflicts on us.

Whilst exploring my local area for inspiration, I happened to see a man rather unfortunately excreted on by a pigeon! He looked thoroughly embarrassed and disgusted, which prompted me to create an urban style print based onphotographs of actual bird deposits, in order to disguise this humiliation, should it be your ‘lucky’ day. I screen-printed the pattern using specialist ‘puffbinder’ink in order to create an extra realistic textured effect!

Different ways of using design to embed science in everyday objects.

The catastrophic decline in interest in science at school and college has been the stimulus for my work. The pieces featured here form part of my ongoing work ‘Domestic Science’, where I have been exploring different ways of using design to embed science in everyday objects, using the established user experiences to communicate relevant scientific concepts.

The measuring jugs use the product language of the family kitchen and the laboratory to reveal elements of scale, risk, arbitrariness, volumes and numbers that are present in science. ‘You’re one in a million’ is a poster for the home with a million dots, one of which is yellow. It makes super scale tangible in a world where most science is too big or small to see.

What would make the best urban camouflage?

Something that could be used almost anywhere in an urban environment: The project had begun by looking at patterns, taking images of crowds, cutting them up and printing them on fabric.

While this worked to a certain extent on busy streets, it was far from perfect. I began looking at animals that mimic as a form of camouflage, and tried to implement this into an urban situation.

The one thing that seems to dominate the streets of London, are black bin bags, they are so abundant that they have become invisible… the perfect camouflage. When the wearer crouches down, the dress can be lifted over their head, revealing the bin liners. Simple as that.

An experimental typographic piece exploring ways of creating three-dimensional letterforms from two-dimensional materials.

The work is made from a large sheet of paper which was manually shredded. Each strip was then folded outwards on a pre designed map to create the sentence ‘Shredding is all about the details’.

The sentence draws the importance of shredding personal details to avoid identity fraud. The undulating pattern at the bottom of the piece shows an abstract cityscape, the scene of the crime.

A bag stuck in a tree is merely a bag in the wrong context.

It is a common occurrence in an urban environment but one that is often overlooked and unappreciated. To see it blowing gracefully in the breeze, filled with the warm glow of the sun can be quite mesmerising.

I wanted to capture this moment in its entirety by suspending the branches in space, so it appears to float, completely detached and isolated from its surroundings.

The branches have been rendered in a stylised, almost abstract form to exaggerate the re-contextualisation of the object itself and the colour selections help to push this further.

The use of a real plastic bag as the diffuser creates a stark contrast with the finely crafted branches that display it, and enables the mood of the light to be altered by either crumpling the bag up or replacing it with one in a different colour or graphic.

Today’s cutting-edge scientific theories may one day be seen as quaint and curious museum pieces: theoretical antiques or abstract junk.

What happens to once celebrated, now superseded theories?

Physicists have been developing sophisticated theories around the existence of things that are impossible for us to see, perfecting mathematical models of the ‘beyond-visible’ worlds of the very large and distant (using Einstein’s theory of relativity) and the very small (using quantum mechanics).

Focusing on this realm of the intangible, I wanted to explore how abstract theoretical ideas can be visually represented. I also wanted to play with the notion that today’s cutting-edge theories may one day be seen as quaint and curious museum pieces: theoretical antiques or abstract junk.

Perhaps the objects might be found in someone’s dusty attic or turn up on Antiques Roadshow in the future: “Oh my! Look what they thought in 2008!”
