Pirate Nation

I went to a debate on copyright in the digital age called "pirate nation", at the ICA, chaired by Matt Mason and Andrew Orlowski. I was hoping for fiercer debate, and a dicussion that actually
questioned what a stupid idea copyright actually is.

Heres a bit of Andrew Orlowski, from some article, on Creative Commons...

"The Creative Commons people are inclined to indulge in a kind of technological determinism, and the value and necessity of compensating gifted creative people is neglected. As we shall see, this leads to the quite unpleasant misanthropy and snobbery common in techno-utopian circles."

Im not sure we move in techno-utopian circles, I hope not, sounds boring.

SomeRightsReserved uses creative commons, gives away ideas
for free, and doesn''t generate direct income for designers that
choose to distribute in this manner.

The value of this activity would be missed by Orlowski, but
there is still value for those involved, just not directly
monetary. Increased exposure of their work, the dissemination of their ideas, and the possibility for that to spawn offshoots will no doubt lead to other interesting developments.

Matt Mason on the other hand made a couple of good points,
namely that piracy only exists as a sign of market failure. (He made more but im tired and cant remember ).

See the video below for one of Matt''s talks, he seems to be looking
at the same stuff as us, rapid prototyping, reprap and even Sealand.

So one of the segments in our Reveal installation at Selfridges that has been up and running for a while is the Chrono Shredder by Susanna Hertrich.

The Chrono_Shredder is a device that makes past time tangible. It is a hybrid between calendar, clock and waste producing automaton. It has no on/off-button, thus it is unstoppable, just like time. It features the 365 days of the year represented on a paper-roll. The paper-roll is led through a hacked paper-shredder, which is programmed to use exactly 24 hours to shred one "day".
